The European Bioinformatics Institute Training Workshop
10th May
The European Bioinformatics Institute encompasses genome databases such as Ensembl (with its strong focus in highlighting variation incorporating HapMap data, but also data from ENCODE and resequencing efforts), the European Genotype Archive (EGA) a repository of genotype experiments including case control, population and family studies (which will be extended to include SNPs and CNV genotypes from array based methods), and the HUGO Gene Nomenclature Committee amongst other large databanks. Furthermore, we are part of the 1000 Genomes project which aims to create the most detailed and medically useful picture of human genetic variation and Gen2Phen an EU funded project which aims to unify human and model organism genetic variation databases, linking resources into other biomedical knowledge sources amongst other relevant efforts to encapsulate human variation.
The workshop consists of the following modules. Most modules consist of a presentation, followed by the opportunity to do exercises. Participants are encouraged to bring problems/questions about their research to try to tackle these during the workshop using Ensembl.
Draft agenda
0900 - 0930 Wellcome. Outline of The Human Variome Project0930 - 1030 Ensembl and the European Genotype Archive (EGA)
1030 - 1100 Coffee break
1100 - 1230 A Guided tour to Ensembl
1230 - 1330 Lunch, UNESCO cafeteria
1330 - 1500 BioMart (Case Study)
1500 - 1530 Coffee break
1530 - 1630 Variation in Ensembl (SNPs, LD, CNV)
1630 – 1700 Case Study (come with your own questions)
The Ensembl project provides a comprehensive and integrated source of annotation of mainly vertebrate genome sequences. With this workshop we offer participants the possibility of gaining lots of hands-on experience in the use of the Ensembl genome browser, providing them with the necessary background information. Thus, we would encourage participants to come with their own questions so that we can address them in the surgery time or throughout the day.
Workshop Requirements
You must bring your laptop which must have a wireless card in order to participate.
Questions?
For questions related to your registration for the workshops, please contact Xose Fernandez via email at xose@ebi.ac.uk.
Early expressions of interest are invited through the application process on the HVP website. Note, places are limited in the UNESCO building, and a fee of Euro 50 will be charged to cover costs which include morning and afternoon coffee breaks and lunch in the UNESCO cafeteria.
If you wish to attend this meeting, please register at the time of registering for the HVP meeting as numbers are limited due to space constraints. If you are not attending the HVP meeting you can still attend but you will need to REGISTER WITH THE SECRETARIAT AS THE ONLINE SYSTEM DOES NOT ALLOW IT WITHOUT HVP REGISTRATION. Please fill out the Special Satellite Registration Form linked here ONLY IF YOU ARE NOT ATTENDING THE HVP IN WHICH CASE YOU CAN BOOK THIS ONLINE
